In addition to the already mentioned Federal Budget and the provincial budget in Saskatchewan, this week provincial budgets were introduced in Ontario (yesterday) and Nova Scotia (today). Here's a look at the proposed post-secondary education-related spending in those two provinces:
Ontario Budget
Ontario's governing Liberals announced one-time funding of $390 million for post-secondary institutions ($210 million for universities). There is also $57 million to be allocated to a selected number of environmental research projects. This is in addition to multi-year funding of $6.2-billion for post-secondary education announced in the 2005 Budget under the Reaching Higher Plan.
Nova Scotia Budget
This budget provides a 15.3% increase in operating funding ($13.5 million) for Nova Scotia Community College, and $3.6 million for Nova Scotia’s apprenticeship system.
Nova Scotia universities will get a funding increase of $22.9 million, $12.5 million of which will be used to compensate universities for keeping tuition fees at 2006 levels for all students, regardless of students' financial need. An additional $11.6 million will be provided for a needs-based bursary program for Nova Scotia residents attending Nova Scotia universities.
The Nova Scotia government is also planning to double its Graduate Tax Credit to $2,000 in 2008 to encourage post-secondary graduates to stay and work in the province after graduation.
